Why is my steering wheel shaking?
A shaking steering wheel almost always comes down to unbalanced wheels, warped brake rotors, or worn suspension. The giveaway is when it shakes: at highway speed it's usually wheel balance or tyres; only when you brake it's warped front rotors; constantly or over bumps it's suspension and steering wear.
The most common causes
A steady shake that appears around 80–110 km/h and smooths off above or below. Fixed with a wheel balance, or a tyre if it's worn unevenly.
Shakes at speedIf the wheel (and often the pedal) judders only when you brake, the front rotors are warped. Common after heavy braking or age.
Shakes when brakingWorn ball joints, tie-rod ends or bushes cause a looser, constant shake or wander — and they're a safety item.
Constant / over bumpsA kerb strike or pothole can bend a rim; uneven wear from bad wheel alignment does the same thing.
